The Process

1 - File preparation

We’ve made a detailed guide on this step. Download the PDF below.

2 - Consoltation

We discuss your project in depth, going over your expectations and needs. The more information provided, the better the result is likely to be.

3 - Upload your files

Upload the files that are to be mixed to a file sharing service. Our preferred service is Google Drive, its free and easy to use.

4 - The project begins

Work begins on your project. Leave it to us, but don’t think the communication halts here. You will be kept in the loop throughout the whole process.

5 - Rough mix

The first rendition of your project is shared, and like the consultation process, we discuss in depth the result, and identify areas for improvement.

6 - Final mix

The final mix is only achieved when the result is nothing short of perfect, and you are beyond satisfied. Your file will be returned to you as a .wav, and an MP3.

We’ve made a guide to uncover exactly what you need to do for the file sharing process so that we can promptly start working on your project successfully. Download the PDF guide from the link below!

How it works

Mixing & Mastering is the process of taking your recordings to the next level. In this day and age, it can be difficult to stand out among the thousands of new songs and artists. What can separate you from the crowd is a truly professional sound, one that compliments your efforts. This is achieved not only through a skilful and knowledgeable sound engineer, but through a sound engineer whose passion is evident in their craft.

Mixing is like painting a picture, and mastering is perfectly placing that picture on the wall. The outcome is dependent on your vision, as we have the tools to achieve it. The mixing process is one of creating definition, space, clarity, and separation. This is achieved through a number of methods, such as level balancing, equalisation, compression, saturation, effects, and panning. These methods when applied, result in a mix that is characterful, a mix that is representative of your sound. It allows for all the minute details to be heard, and overall – your recordings come to life.

Mastering is the process of refining your mix. It doesn’t seek to change the sound, rather it aims to further define it. The mastering approach is much different to that of mixing. A mastering engineer views the track as a whole, and seeks to ensure that it stands up against the sound of modern recordings. The major aspect of mastering is achieving adequate loudness, without sacrificing elements of the mix. Mastering is about shaping the sound, and controlling it. Mastering uses the same tools as mixing, although, how they are used differs in the mindset of the engineer.

How its done

  • The mixing process begins with your tracks being placed into a specially crafted and professional mixing template that differs depending on the genre that your project falls into.
  • Your project is then level balanced, and an inital rough mix is completed that includes panning, routing, and small amounts of equalisation. During this stage depending on your package and requirements, a hardware bus compressor is routed to the ‘pre-master’ section.
  • From the previous stage, your tracks are then treated in accordance to the song and your specifications. This treatment includes equalisation, compression, filtering, gain structuring, saturation, effects (such as reverb and delay), spectral imaging, excitation, limiting, re-amping, and much more.
  • A rough mix will then be provided to you, where you will provide feedback. This feedback will then be taken and translated into the above treatment methods where we will revisit the mix, and work to make fine adjustments until you are satisfied with the outcome.

  • The mastering process begins with an initial referencing stage. This is where your track is processed briefly to maximise loudness, and is then compared to our engineers reference material, and material that you submit for referencing.
  • Your project then enters a stage of critical listening, where its tonality and dynamics are corrected. These are not large changes, and they are aimed at specific problems that are identified, such as resonant frequencies, or particular areas of harsh tonality.
  • After the critical listening and correction stage, your project is then tonally balanced. This stage can include subtle adjustments, or adjustments that add certain desired characteristics (or accentuate the character of a mix).
  • Following the above stage, your project will then be processed to maximise loudness within the confines of your specifications. This stage is critical, as the objective is to achieve said loudness without sacrificing the quality of the mix. After the desired loudness is achieved, your track will once again enter a stage of critical listening to ensure that no further issues arose in the previous process.
  • Your project is then shared as a rough mix, where your feedback is noted, and relevant changes are then made to ensure a satisfactory outcome.

All projects are processed using the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) Pro Tools. Pro Tools ensures maximum audio fidelity, and it’s processing does not cut corners – it ensures that your audio remains uncompromised. All Pro Tools processing operates on 32-bit floating point. This processing is internal, and is not dependant on the bit-rate of your project.

Your project will be mixed using professional industry standard plugins from the following companies:

  • FabFilter
  • Izotope
  • Waves
  • Valhalla
  • Soundtoys

The studio functions through the use of the Antelope Audio Discrete 4 Synergy Core audio interface. Antelope audio offers extreme clarity in their monitoring and preamps, along with industry leading word clocking technology and AD/DA converters.

The audio interface is connected to a Neutrik fully balanced patch-bay, allowing all the equipment in the studio to be connected easily, and without sacrifice to the audios quality.

Hardware available:

  • TK Audio BC1-THD SSL G series bus compressor clone.
  • Warm Audio EQP-WA
  • Warm Audio WA76
  • Neve 1073 microphone preamps

Main nearfield monitors: Yamaha HS5

Secondary nearfield monitors: Genelec 8010A

Midfield monitors: HEDD Type 20

The studio is treated using custom JMH Sound Design acoustic panels and sound diffusers. This system aims to absorb uncontrolled low-end frequencies along with the first reflection points from the monitoring system. A custom rear wall sound diffuser aims to diffuse frequencies ranging from 500hz to 5000hz, and towards the ceiling of the room higher frequencies are diffused using acoustic foam, preventing slap-back delays.

The result is a controlled room with a monitoring system that produces results that translate well onto all sound systems, ranging from small phone headphones to home hi-fi systems.

  • All work will be carried out through the use of a contractual agreement. This ensures your protection as a client and allows you to clearly see our obligations to you.
  • Turnaround times depend on the circumstances of the project. Turnaround times are reflective of a ‘perfect scenario’ where the client is immediately pleased with the result. • All payments are requested to be paid through the use of invoices. You are obliged to provide an email contact so as these invoices can be sent securely to you. All information collected by us is protected in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Aus) and your information will not be used for any purpose outside of the project that is not approved by you.
  • If your project qualify’s for ‘unlimited revisions’, this is so only within the timeframe of the project as listed in the contract. This timeframe can be negotiated and is designed to provide you with enough time to consider our work properly and wholly before the final mix is provided to you. You are entitled to request a revision outside of the project’s timeframe, but this will incur an additional fee of $50 per major revision. A major revision is any change that requires reconstruction of the overall mix or master.
